Skincare Routine for Combination Skin

Oct 12, 2026

Build a comfortable combination-skin routine for a shiny T-zone and drier cheeks, without over-cleansing or skipping moisturizer.

How do you know if your skin is combination?

Combination skin usually means your face behaves differently across zones. Your forehead, nose and chin might become oily while your cheeks feel normal or dry. This pattern is common, but it can shift with weather, hormonal changes and products. Notice how your skin feels a few hours after cleansing rather than relying on one afternoon of shine. Having an oily nose does not automatically mean your entire face needs acne treatment.

Choose a cleanser that respects both areas

A cleanser should remove sunscreen, makeup residue and everyday buildup without leaving your cheeks tight. Start with a gentle wash in the evening, and add a morning wash only if your skin benefits from it. Lukewarm water is usually more comfortable than hot water. If your face feels squeaky, dry or irritated afterward, that may be a sign that your cleanser or washing frequency is too harsh.

Yes, the oily areas still need moisture

Moisturizer helps skin feel comfortable and supports its barrier, including on oilier zones. Choose a texture you enjoy. You might apply one lightweight moisturizer across the face and add a little extra to the cheeks if they feel dry. There is no rule that says you must purchase a separate moisturizer for each side of your nose. Comfort and consistency matter more than achieving a permanently matte forehead.

Make sunscreen a daily non-negotiable

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen in the morning, in the amount directed by its label. A fluid texture can feel easier to layer for some people, but any suitable sunscreen needs adequate coverage to work as intended. If your sunscreen pills, allow earlier products to settle and avoid excessive rubbing. Do not use a tiny amount simply because you dislike shine; that can reduce the protection you actually get.

What if your T-zone has clogged pores?

Shine and acne are not the same thing. If the forehead or nose develops recurring blackheads or clogged pores, an ingredient such as salicylic acid may be relevant in a carefully introduced product. Avoid putting exfoliating acids on uncomfortable, flaky cheeks just because the T-zone looks congested. Introduce one new active at a time and follow the product instructions rather than combining several exfoliants straight away.

A routine with SESH products

SESH Super Cleanse is available as a cleanser developed for combination-to-oily skin and may be an option for the cleansing step if your skin tolerates it. Simply ONE SPF50+ is an option for morning sun protection. Select a moisturizer that suits your skin's comfort and check the current instructions for every product you use.

Morning versus evening

Morning: cleanse gently only if needed, moisturize and apply sunscreen. Evening: remove makeup and sunscreen, cleanse gently, then use a targeted treatment only when you have a particular concern, and finish with moisturizer. On a dry, windy day, you may want more comfort on the cheeks. On a hot day, a lighter texture may feel better. You can adjust texture without rebuilding your entire routine.

When to simplify or get advice

If your cheeks begin to sting, peel or feel increasingly tight, revisit the cleansing and exfoliation steps first. If breakouts are painful, widespread or leave scars, speak with a dermatologist. The most effective routine is not necessarily the one with the most bottles. It is the one that keeps the skin comfortable while meeting a real need and is easy enough to repeat.
