Double Cleansing for Oily Skin: When Two Cleansers Help

Sep 11, 2023

Double cleansing is useful when two different cleansing jobs need to happen. It is not a rule that every face needs every night.

Quick Take

Use the first cleanse to dissolve makeup, sunscreen and surface residue. Use the second cleanse to clean the skin. If one gentle cleanse already does the job, stop there.

Step one: remove the layer sitting on the skin

Oil-based cleansers, balms or makeup-removing lotions are designed to loosen long-wear makeup, sunscreen and oily residue with less rubbing.

Step two: cleanse the skin itself

Your regular cleanser then removes the remaining residue, excess oil and daily dirt. This is where skin type and cleanser strength matter.

When double cleansing is useful

  • Water-resistant sunscreen.
  • Long-wear or waterproof makeup.
  • Heavy layering of makeup over sunscreen.
  • A first cleanse that visibly removes product but leaves a film behind.

When one cleanse is enough

If you wore little product and your cleanser leaves skin comfortably clean, a second step may add friction without adding value.

Signs you are over-cleansing

Persistent tightness, roughness, stinging or the famous “squeaky clean” feeling can mean the routine is too aggressive. Clean skin should not feel punished.

The takeaway

Double cleansing is a practical technique, not a skincare commandment. Two different jobs, two cleansers. One job, one cleanser.
