What it is & what it does
Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial/BMHCA) is a fragrance ingredient, not a skincare active.
WHAT IT IS: Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial/BMHCA) is a fragrance ingredient, not a skincare active.
HOW IT WORKS: It is prohibited in cosmetic products in the European Union from 1 March 2022 following its CMR classification and safety concerns. If this INCI is still present in a current formula, it deserves a formulation/regulatory review rather than consumer-benefit marketing.
WHY ITS ROLE MATTERS: Aromatic compounds are included to provide or modify a product's scent. Fragrance perception is part of the user experience, but these molecules are not proof of biological skincare performance. Some fragrant substances require separate allergen labeling under applicable market rules.
A REALISTIC EXPECTATION: The important distinction is fragrance function versus an active proven to change skin condition.
