What it is & what it does
Cetyl Alcohol is a fatty alcohol used to soften skin and thicken emulsions.
WHAT IT IS: Cetyl Alcohol is a fatty alcohol used to soften skin and thicken emulsions.
HOW IT WORKS: It creates a smoother protective feel and helps creams stay stable. It is non-drying and behaves very differently from ethanol.
WHY ITS ROLE MATTERS: Emollients soften dry or rough-feeling skin by improving the surface lipid phase and how the formula spreads. Some also form a light film that helps limit moisture loss; this is different from humectants that bind water. The benefit depends on the final mix of oils, waxes, lipids and water-based moisturizers.
A REALISTIC EXPECTATION: A useful emollient can make a routine more comfortable without being a direct acne, pigmentation or wrinkle-treatment active.
