Isopropyl Myristate

INCI Isopropyl Myristate

Emollient / Slip Agent Hydration & Barrier

What it is & what it does

Isopropyl Myristate is a fast-spreading ester emollient and penetration-enhancing solvent.
WHAT IT IS: Isopropyl Myristate is a fast-spreading ester emollient and penetration-enhancing solvent.

HOW IT WORKS: It reduces roughness and gives a silky finish, while also helping some oil-soluble ingredients move through the outer skin more easily. Some acne-prone users find very rich formulas containing it less comfortable, so the whole formula matters.

WHY ITS ROLE MATTERS: Emollients soften dry or rough-feeling skin by improving the surface lipid phase and how the formula spreads. Some also form a light film that helps limit moisture loss; this is different from humectants that bind water. The benefit depends on the final mix of oils, waxes, lipids and water-based moisturizers.

A REALISTIC EXPECTATION: A useful emollient can make a routine more comfortable without being a direct acne, pigmentation or wrinkle-treatment active.

Usage & cautions

Very acne-prone skin may prefer to patch test richer formulas containing high levels of Isopropyl Myristate.
