Lanolin

INCI Lanolin

Emollient / Occlusive Hydration & Barrier

What it is & what it does

Lanolin is a waxy emollient and occlusive derived from wool.
WHAT IT IS: Lanolin is a waxy emollient and occlusive derived from wool.

HOW IT WORKS: It is excellent at reducing water loss and softening very dry, rough skin, which is why it is common in protective balms. Lanolin allergy exists, particularly in people with chronic dermatitis.

WHY ITS ROLE MATTERS: Emollients soften dry or rough-feeling skin by improving the surface lipid phase and how the formula spreads. Some also form a light film that helps limit moisture loss; this is different from humectants that bind water. The benefit depends on the final mix of oils, waxes, lipids and water-based moisturizers.

A REALISTIC EXPECTATION: A useful emollient can make a routine more comfortable without being a direct acne, pigmentation or wrinkle-treatment active.

Usage & cautions

People with a confirmed lanolin allergy should avoid it.
