What it is & what it does

Limonene is a citrus-scented fragrance molecule naturally present in many essential oils.
WHAT IT IS: Limonene is a citrus-scented fragrance molecule naturally present in many essential oils.

HOW IT WORKS: It does not provide a direct skincare benefit. Fresh limonene is relatively low-sensitizing, but its oxidation products can become much more allergenic after air exposure, which is why antioxidant protection and proper formula storage matter.

WHY ITS ROLE MATTERS: Aromatic compounds are included to provide or modify a product's scent. Fragrance perception is part of the user experience, but these molecules are not proof of biological skincare performance. Some fragrant substances require separate allergen labeling under applicable market rules.

A REALISTIC EXPECTATION: The important distinction is fragrance function versus an active proven to change skin condition.

Usage & cautions

Fragrance-allergic users may react especially to oxidized limonene.
