What it is & what it does
Oleic Acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid that works as an emollient and penetration enhancer.
WHAT IT IS: Oleic Acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid that works as an emollient and penetration enhancer.
HOW IT WORKS: It softens skin and can increase movement of some ingredients through the stratum corneum. However, concentrated oleic acid can disrupt barrier lipids in experimental models, so it should not automatically be marketed as a barrier-repair fatty acid.
WHY ITS ROLE MATTERS: Emollients soften dry or rough-feeling skin by improving the surface lipid phase and how the formula spreads. Some also form a light film that helps limit moisture loss; this is different from humectants that bind water. The benefit depends on the final mix of oils, waxes, lipids and water-based moisturizers.
A REALISTIC EXPECTATION: A useful emollient can make a routine more comfortable without being a direct acne, pigmentation or wrinkle-treatment active.
