Anionic Cleansing Surfactant Cleansing & Conditioning

What it is & what it does

Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate is a strong anionic cleansing surfactant.
WHAT IT IS: Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate is a strong anionic cleansing surfactant.

HOW IT WORKS: It produces high foam and removes oil effectively, making it useful for heavy cleansing. Because it can be more stripping than milder surfactants, formulation balance with amphoteric/nonionic cleansers and conditioning ingredients is important.

WHY ITS ROLE MATTERS: Cleansing surfactants interact with oily residues and water to help remove soil, sebum and makeup when rinsed. Their concentration and combination determine foam, mildness and cleaning strength. Stronger cleansing is not automatically better for a sensitive skin barrier.

A REALISTIC EXPECTATION: The role of a cleansing ingredient in a rinse-off product is different from that of a leave-on active, so pore-clearing or anti-acne claims need separate evidence.

Usage & cautions

Very dry or sensitive skin may find strongly cleansing formulas containing high levels of this surfactant too stripping.
