What it is & what it does
Sodium Hydroxide is a pH adjuster used in very small amounts.
WHAT IT IS: Sodium Hydroxide is a strongly alkaline substance used in very small controlled amounts in cosmetics to adjust pH or support manufacturing processes.
HOW IT WORKS / EVIDENCE: In a properly finished formula, it is reacted and balanced to achieve the intended pH; its presence in the INCI does not mean the finished cream is caustic. Raw sodium hydroxide is corrosive and should never be applied to skin directly. It is not an exfoliating active in normal cosmetic pH-adjustment use.
PRACTICAL ROLE: The relevant consumer property is the measured finished-product pH, not an isolated ingredient name. The actual finished-product role and supporting evidence govern the claims that can be made.
