What it is & what it does
Tartaric Acid is an AHA used for pH control and, in acid blends, additional exfoliation.
WHAT IT IS: Tartaric Acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid that may be used in cosmetics for pH adjustment and, in certain formulations, support of exfoliating systems.
HOW IT WORKS / EVIDENCE: Its actual exfoliating capacity depends on free-acid concentration and the finished pH, not merely on belonging to the AHA family. In many products it is primarily a formula-control ingredient. It should not automatically be equated with a high-strength glycolic or lactic acid peel.
PRACTICAL ROLE: The correct explanation distinguishes chemical identity from the job it performs at the actual dosage. The actual finished-product role and supporting evidence govern the claims that can be made.
