Case lab: interrogate three anti-ageing claims
A product can contain an active that researchers study without proving every promise on its box. Audit a retinoid, a peptide and a collagen claim one by one.

Three hypothetical pitches
Pitch A: 'Contains 1% retinol, erases ten years in ten days', with no controlled human outcome. Pitch B: 'Peptide activates collagen' based on a cell marker in vitro, but no finished-product human trial. Pitch C: 'Collagen cream makes skin smoother instantly', supported by short-term participant-rated softness. Each evidence package addresses a different, narrower question.

A names an ingredient and concentration but does not demonstrate the dramatic endpoint. B suggests an in-vitro mechanism but not clinical wrinkle reduction. C may legitimately support a transient sensory or appearance claim if the measurement is reliable, but not new collagen synthesis. Compare strength for the exact statement, not broad category prestige.
Risk and tolerance enter the verdict
Retinoids may cause irritation, and pregnancy-related precautions are important. 'Higher strength' can increase adverse effects without proportionate benefit, and clinical outcomes depend on the actual formula and regimen. Avoid comparing prescription tretinoin evidence directly against a cosmetic retinol label.
Evidence-to-copy editing
Rewrite A as 'contains retinol; clinical wrinkle results for this formula were not provided', B as 'laboratory findings suggest an investigational mechanism', and C as 'users reported short-term softness under the described conditions' if accurately measured. Precision is not anti-marketing; it builds credibility.
Retinol has a carbon chain ending in an alcohol group. It is distinct from retinal and retinoic acid; related names do not make these materials interchangeable.

A sales manager asks you to write 'Clinically proven collagen renewal in 10 days' using only the three hypothetical data packages. What exact objection should you make and which weaker consumer-relevant claim might be defensible?

Model reasoning and safety decision
None measured human collagen renewal in ten days, so reject that statement. C might support short-term softness if its measurement is fair; the retinol and peptide claims need appropriate finished-product human endpoints. Include safety limitations.
