Core idea

Start with a clear concern and read directions, especially for exfoliating acids and retinoids. Where appropriate, a small-area product trial can identify some reactions; AAD describes testing twice daily for 7–10 days. It cannot rule out every future allergy or replace medical assessment.

Look beneath the label

Introduce one new product at a time and gradually increase frequency when directions permit. Record the baseline: tightness, new blemishes and marks. If you change cleanser, serum and moisturizer together, it becomes difficult to identify what caused a reaction.

Apply what you learned

Severe burning or persistent rash calls for stopping the product and reviewing the cause; do not excuse significant irritation as 'purging.' Severe swelling or breathing difficulty needs urgent care. Cosmetic retinoids are generally avoided in pregnancy without clinical direction.

A tolerance test is not an allergy diagnosis

For suitable cosmetics, the AAD describes testing on a small skin area twice daily for seven to ten days, following the product's intended contact time. Strong actives require their own directions and should not be tested indiscriminately. Passing a small-area test does not guarantee that a later allergy will never occur.

When to reconsider a new active

Severe stinging, rash, swelling or persistent pain following an active should lead to stopping it and reassessing. Some products can cause mild early dryness, but that is not proof of efficacy. Record the active and timing of reactions, avoid changing multiple variables and seek care for severe or unusual symptoms.
