Retinoid and acid irritation: expected effects versus warning signs
Separate possible early dryness from excessive reactions.
Find the stratum corneum at the top and cell renewal below. This is thick skin, such as a palm; its clear lucidum layer is absent from facial skin.
Peeling is not the endpoint
Some retinoid formulas can cause early dryness or flaking; severe burning, painful cracking or persistent rash is not a badge of efficacy. Exfoliating acids may also irritate, particularly with excessive frequency or combinations.
Adjust use responsibly
Follow cosmetic label directions and track tolerability. Changes to prescription acne regimens should be discussed with the clinician. A cosmetic retinol and prescribed retinoid should not be casually stacked on the assumption they are unrelated.
Context and risk
Pregnancy and possible pregnancy change retinoid choices and require clinician guidance. Severe dermatitis or cracked skin warrants reducing irritant exposure and possibly clinical assessment. More fragranced cosmetics are not automatically a solution.
Retinol has a carbon chain ending in an alcohol group. It is distinct from retinal and retinoic acid; related names do not make these materials interchangeable.

Case: escalating burning with retinol
Daily retinol was followed by an aggressive weekly peel; washing now causes pain.
Reasoned next step: Stop suspected triggers and reassess according to directions, seeking help for persistent pain.
The pitfall to avoid
Calling persistent pain an unavoidable purge.
