Irritation versus allergy

Learn the mechanism and apply it to a practical routine.
Find the stratum corneum at the top and cell renewal below. This is thick skin, such as a palm; its clear lucidum layer is absent from facial skin.
Core idea
Irritant contact dermatitis can follow harsh washing, frequent exfoliation or disruptive substances. Allergic contact dermatitis is an immune response to an allergen and may appear hours or days after contact, even after prior tolerance. Symptoms overlap, so persistent cases may require evaluation.
Look beneath the label
If significant stinging or rash develops, stop the new product and gently rinse if still on skin. Simplify the routine and pause unnecessary actives. Recurrent itchy swollen rashes may warrant medical patch testing; a home spot test cannot diagnose allergy.
Apply what you learned
For a new non-harsh cosmetic, a small-area tolerance trial over several days may help identify some reactions, but cannot guarantee future tolerance. Severe swelling or breathing difficulty is an emergency. 'Natural' or 'hypoallergenic' is not an absolute safety guarantee.
Eyelid and perioral reactions: stop guessing triggers — a published visual reference for the topic, not SESH product-test data.

Irritation can follow repeated contact, friction or aggressive acids. Allergy may occur to a particular substance at small exposures and sometimes after prior use. Symptoms overlap: itching, redness, swelling and dryness. Identifying a true allergen may require clinician-led patch testing rather than guessing at home.
What to do during a reaction
If a product is still on skin and causes an unpleasant reaction, gently wash it away and stop it. Pause unnecessary exfoliants or retinoids and keep the routine simple. Facial swelling with difficulty breathing requires emergency help; persistent or recurring rash calls for assessment instead of internet self-diagnosis.
