What is a serum, and is it essential?
Distinguish a serum format from its function, moisturizer and medication.

Serum is a commonly lightweight formulation format, not a scientific guarantee of concentration. Serums may be hydrating, antioxidant-focused or contain niacinamide or retinoids. Ask what function they provide and what evidence applies to the finished formula.
What changes the result
A moisturizer often combines water-binding, emollient and occlusive roles. A serum may address a selected concern or also hydrate. If your skin is comfortable and stable, adding a trendy serum is not obligatory.
Apply it to a real routine
Define one goal such as post-acne marks, tightness or texture. Add one product according to directions and assess it over a realistic period. Stinging is not proof of effectiveness; medicated acne treatments are not merely cosmetic serums.
This is the niacinamide molecule. Identity does not reveal a product’s concentration or predict its clinical result.

Some serums focus on humectants, others on antioxidants, and others contain vitamin A derivatives. Potency is not dictated by whether the product is named a cream or a serum. A suitable cream may answer a concern better than an expensive serum. Formula quality, testing and tolerability determine the practical value.
A realistic beginner routine
If you already have a comfortable cleanser, moisturizer and SPF, choose one reason before adding your first serum. Tightness after washing may be better solved by cleanser and moisturizer adjustments. Post-acne marks warrant understanding the cause and protecting from UV. Serums should solve problems, not decorate the shelf.
