SPF, UVA-PF and PA: interpreting protection claims

Interpret sunscreen measures without converting labels into hours.

Locate ultraviolet and visible light within the spectrum. This is not a sunscreen protection test; protection must be assessed from product data and testing.

SPF focuses on sunburn protection

SPF is a standardized measure of sunburn-related protection, strongly influenced by UVB. UVA-PF or PPD and PA ratings used in some markets address UVA measures, but regional testing and labeling rules differ. SPF50 is not a promise of fifty protected hours.

Do not invent conversions

Broad-spectrum claims indicate UVA coverage within the applicable regulatory standard; they cannot always be converted arithmetically into a specific PA category. A filter name in INCI is not a substitute for the finished product's tested protection.

Real-use application matters

Coverage, adequate dose and reapplication outdoors after sweating or swimming affect real-world performance. Select a tested broad-spectrum sunscreen you can comfortably use, alongside clothing and shade during extended exposure.

Apply this to a realistic case

Case: SPF50+ without a PA label

A shopper assumes a sunscreen has no UVA protection because it lacks Japan's PA labeling despite a valid broad-spectrum claim in a different jurisdiction.

Reasoned next step: Review actual UVA claims and testing standards, not one rating symbol.

The pitfall to avoid

Multiplying PA and SPF into an invented overall score.
