Dry skin versus dehydration
Separate a skin type from temporary water loss and irritation.
Find the stratum corneum at the top and cell renewal below. This is thick skin, such as a palm; its clear lucidum layer is absent from facial skin.
Science made simple
Dry skin tends to have lower oil and recurring roughness. Low surface hydration can affect dry, oily or combination skin. Harsh cleansing may cause irritation and tightness. The word 'dry' alone does not identify the cause.
What changes the result
Observe forehead, nose and cheeks on ordinary days before products and after washing. Repeated T-zone shine with less oily cheeks suggests combination skin. Tightness that starts after a new cleanser first calls for reviewing that product.
Apply it to a real routine
Start with a comfortable cleanser, lukewarm water and a moisturizer on slightly damp skin. Stronger acids do not solve tightness. Persistent redness, painful cracking or rash warrants professional assessment.
Locate the sebaceous gland and its connection to the follicle. Oil production differs from outer-skin water; shine and temporary dehydration can coexist.

Track where shine appears a few hours into a normal day and when tightness begins: directly after washing, after air conditioning, in cold weather or following a new formula. Record whether cheeks differ from the forehead. Marked itching and inflammation need consideration beyond cosmetic dehydration.
Why texture alone is not enough
A gel rich in water-binding ingredients can suit some oily yet tight skin, while chronically dry skin may need a richer emollient and occlusive blend. Combination skin can benefit from zone-specific amounts. Judge the outcome by reduced tightness, overall comfort and any unwanted reactions.
